  • Description: This original oil painting is based on a banyan tree that I sketched when I first visited Key West. Using that drawing, I’ve made multiple versions of this image – this one was done with fast strokes with both brush and painting knife to create an impressionist image. I used very few colors: red, green, black and white primarily. I like the way the surface looks as much as the whole image, which you can see in the detail of the included second image. Most of my artwork is inspired by nature and the outdoors. I like to play with the paint, and will often build up texture through several layers of paint. This technique takes time, as each layer has to dry thoroughly before the next, so I can both build up and scratch through the layers to create the complex textures. In this painting, I used red and black in the under-painting, and black and white over that to create the shadows and highlights on the branches. (Sold)
